Dr. Mohana Rao Patibandla Delivers TEDx Talk at RGIT Mumbai, Inspires with His Journey from Bhimavaram to USA to Guntur

Mumbai, August 2025 – In an inspiring and deeply personal address, renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Mohana Rao Patibandla took the TEDx stage at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology (RGIT), Mumbai, during TEDxNerul, to share a talk titled “My Journey to Bring Healing Home.” The session, now available on YouTube, offers rare insight into a life dedicated to medicine, service, and making world-class healthcare accessible in rural India.

🎙️ The TEDx Talk: “My Journey to Bring Healing Home”

Dr. Patibandla’s TEDx talk traces his powerful journey from the small town of Bhimavaram in Andhra Pradesh to the world’s top neurosurgical institutions in the United States—and back to Guntur, where he established Dr. Rao’s Hospital, now one of India’s leading centers for brain, spine, and endovascular surgery.

He spoke not just as a doctor, but as a son of the soil—one who witnessed the healthcare crisis in villages and chose to redefine neurosurgical care in Tier-2 India, armed with global training and local empathy.

“I could have stayed abroad and lived comfortably. But I saw a greater need here, in the very places where care is hardest to find,” said Dr. Patibandla during his address.

🌍 From Global Expertise to Local Impact

After completing his MBBS from Andhra Medical College, Dr. Rao pursued his M.Ch. in Neurosurgery at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad, and went on to receive advanced fellowships in the USA across:

  • Minimally Invasive Skull Base Surgery (Ohio)

  • Pediatric Neurosurgery (Colorado, Ohio)

  • Neuro-oncology & Radiosurgery (Virginia)

  • Endovascular Neurosurgery (Virginia)

Returning to India, he brought these advanced skills to Guntur—a city previously overlooked for specialized care. Today, Dr. Rao’s Hospital features:

  • India’s only hybrid neurosurgery operating suite in a Tier-2 city

  • Biplane cath lab, intraoperative CT, IONM, and neuronavigation

  • Pioneering use of BrainPath™ and minimally invasive surgery

🌱 A Message Rooted in Purpose

In his TEDx talk, Dr. Rao reminded the audience that healing is not only clinical—it’s also social. With heartfelt anecdotes, he emphasized how access to high-quality surgery changed lives—of farmers, teachers, and everyday citizens who otherwise would have remained untreated or impoverished by travel and costs.

“Minimally invasive neurosurgery is more than a surgical choice. It’s about less pain, fewer scars, and faster returns to life.”

He explained how even in underserved areas like Guntur, it’s possible to offer excellence, when driven by values: precision, compassion, and access.

🧭 Final Word

Dr. Mohana Rao Patibandla’s TEDx talk is not just a speech—it is a call to action. It reminds us that world-class healing doesn’t need to exist only in metro cities. Through resilience, vision, and purpose, one man turned a small Indian city into a global-standard neurosurgical hub. And his story is far from over.

TOTAL TEDx TALK

My Journey to Bring Healing Home: A Neurosurgeon’s Quest in Guntur

Imagine a small village in Andhra Pradesh, where dreams are big but opportunities feel distant. That’s where my story begins—in Bhimavaram, a place of grit and heart. I was a kid who loved asking questions, always curious about how things worked. Little did I know, that curiosity would lead me to the intricate world of the human brain, a universe of its own.

I’m Dr. Mohana Rao Patibandla, a neurosurgeon, and today, I want to share a journey that took me from rural India to the world’s top medical institutions and back to Guntur—a city not known for skyscrapers but for its people’s resilience. My story isn’t just about becoming a doctor; it’s about why I came back and what I’m fighting for.

Growing up, I saw healthcare as a luxury, not a given. In villages like mine, a serious illness meant long journeys to cities, draining savings and hope. That stuck with me. I studied hard, topped my school, and earned my MBBS at Andhra Medical College in 2002. But neurosurgery called me—a field where one millimeter can change a life. I pursued my M.Ch. at Nizam’s Institute in Hyderabad, diving into the brain’s mysteries. Yet, I knew I needed more.

So, I went to the United States. There, I trained in the best hospitals, learning minimally invasive skull base surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, and Endovascular Neurosurgery over Six intense years. I worked with pioneers, mastered tools that seemed like science fiction, and earned accolades like the BrainLab Neurosurgery Award. I could have stayed—built a comfortable life abroad. But something pulled me back.

Guntur. Why Guntur? People ask me that a lot. It’s not Mumbai or Delhi, not a medical hub. But that’s exactly why. I saw families in Andhra Pradesh traveling hundreds of miles for care they couldn’t afford. I saw schemes like Arogyasree offering free treatment but often lacking the precision technology that saves lives. I wanted to change that. So, I founded Dr. Rao’s Hospital, bringing world-class neurosurgery home.

Building it wasn’t easy. Guntur lacked the infrastructure for a high-tech hospital. Securing funds for equipment like the first biplane cath lab in the Telugu states, a hybrid operation theater, and a Intraoperative Neuromonitoring Unit felt like climbing a mountain. Training staff, navigating bureaucracy—it was relentless. But every challenge was worth it when I saw a farmer walk out of my hospital, tumor gone, ready to tend his fields again.

My values are simple: precision, compassion, and access. Neurosurgery isn’t just about cutting—it’s about giving someone their life back. Minimally invasive techniques, like endoscopic surgery, mean smaller scars, less pain, and faster recoveries. A 2023 study showed these methods cut complications by 30% compared to traditional surgeries. That’s not just data; it’s a mother returning to her kids sooner, a teacher back in the classroom.

My passion? It’s bridging the gap. Advanced care shouldn’t be a privilege for the wealthy or the urban. In Guntur, we’re proving that a smaller city can host world-class medicine. Patients come from across India, even beyond, because they trust us to deliver. We’ve been honored—the ET Business Excellence Award in 2025, the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Unity Award in 2025, and the Atal Achievement Awards in 2023—but the real reward is a patient’s smile.

My vision is bigger than one hospital. I dream of a day when every corner of India has access to the care I’ve brought to Guntur. It’s not just about technology; it’s about building systems, training doctors, and challenging the notion that quality care is limited to big cities. The road is tough—costs, scale, and systemic flaws are real hurdles. But progress doesn’t wait for perfect conditions. It’s forged by those who dare to start.

I stand here not as someone who’s “made it,” but as someone who’s still running the race. Every surgery, every patient, every step forward in Guntur is a step toward a future where healing isn’t a journey away—it’s home. That’s my story, my fight, and my promise. Thank you.

Back pain burden and surgical options in India and Andhra Pradesh

Back pain is a significant health concern in India and Andhra Pradesh, with a substantial burden on individuals and the healthcare system.

1. Prevalence and burden

  • High Prevalence: A systematic review and meta-analysis found a lifetime prevalence of low back pain (LBP) in India to be around 66%.
  • Leading Cause of Disability: LBP is the leading cause of Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) globally, including in India, impacting quality of life and productivity.
  • Economic Impact: Back pain imposes a substantial financial burden, resulting in lost workdays, medical consultations, and increased medication expenses.
  • Contributing Factors: Sedentary lifestyles, poor posture (especially among office workers), improper lifting techniques, obesity, lack of exercise, smoking, age, and certain medical conditions all contribute to the prevalence of back pain.
  • High-Risk Groups: Females, rural populations, and elementary workers experience higher prevalence rates of LBP in India.

2. When is surgery needed?

While the majority of back pain cases resolve with conservative treatments (rest, medication, physical therapy), surgery may be considered in specific circumstances where non-surgical approaches have failed and the pain is severe or debilitating.
Possible reasons for back pain requiring surgery:
  • Herniated or Ruptured Discs: The discs that cushion the vertebrae may bulge or rupture, pressing on nerves and causing pain, as well as potentially leading to neurological deficits.
  • Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal can compress the spinal cord and nerves, leading to pain, weakness, and numbness.
  • Spondylolisthesis: A vertebra may slip forward onto another, placing pressure on the spinal nerves and potentially causing weakness, as well as issues with bowel or bladder function.
  • Spinal Deformities: Conditions such as scoliosis (a sideways spinal curve) or kyphosis (an excessive forward curve) often require surgery, primarily when they are associated with pain and neurological problems.
  • Spinal Infections: Infections of the spine, such as discitis or osteomyelitis, can cause severe pain and require prompt medical attention, potentially leading to surgical intervention.
  • Spinal Tumors: Cancerous tumors on the spine may press against nerves, leading to back pain and potentially neurological deficits.
  • Vertebral Fractures: Vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty can be performed to stabilize and relieve pain caused by compression fractures, which are often associated with osteoporosis.

3. Surgical options and costs in India

Various surgical procedures are available for back pain, with costs ranging depending on the type of surgery, hospital, city, and other factors.
Type of Spine Surgery Minimum Cost (INR)Average Cost (INR)Maximum Cost (INR)
Lumbar Discectomy120,000156,000400,000

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS): This approach utilizes smaller incisions, resulting in less tissue damage, reduced pain, and a faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery. Procedures like endoscopic spine surgery and nucleoplasty fall under this category.

4. Government support

The Indian government’s Ayushman Bharat Yojna provides financial coverage for various medical procedures, including spine surgeries, to individuals from economically weaker sections, aiming to ensure accessible healthcare for all.
5. Back pain in Andhra Pradesh
  • Leading Research: A research study from the Mallika Spine Centre in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, explored the integration of ultrasonic laser technology in endoscopic spine surgeries for back and neck pain.
  • Accessible Care: Hospitals in Andhra Pradesh offer spine surgery, including minimally invasive techniques, and initiatives such as the TTD’s Pranadana scheme support spinal deformity surgeries for the underprivileged.

6. Important considerations

  • Diagnosis is Key: Proper diagnosis is crucial for determining the underlying cause of back pain and selecting the most appropriate treatment, including determining whether surgery is necessary.
  • Consult with Specialists: Consulting with a spine specialist or neurosurgeon is essential to assess the condition and discuss available treatment options.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Regardless of whether surgery is considered, adopting a healthy lifestyle is crucial, including regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and practicing good posture, to prevent and manage back pain.
In conclusion, back pain is a common and burdensome condition in India and Andhra Pradesh, with various causes and treatment options, including surgery in select cases. Access to surgical procedures is supported by government schemes, and advances in techniques, such as minimally invasive surgery, are improving outcomes. It is essential to remember that most cases of back pain resolve with conservative care, and surgery should be considered only after careful evaluation and discussion with a medical professional.

5 Essential Tips for a Faster Recovery After Spine Surgery

5 Essential Tips for a Faster Recovery After Spine Surgery

Spine surgery can be a life-changing procedure, helping alleviate chronic pain, improve mobility, and enhance your overall quality of life. However, the recovery process is just as critical as the surgery itself. Following the right spine surgery tips is essential for a smooth and speedy recovery. It requires careful planning, dedication, and adherence to medical advice. Whether you’ve undergone a spinal fusion, discectomy, or minimally invasive spine surgery, these 5 essential tips for a faster recovery after spine surgery will guide you through the healing journey.

This blog’ll explore practical, evidence-based strategies to help you recover quickly, reduce complications, and get back to your daily routine. Let’s dive in!

1. Follow Your Surgeon’s Post-Operative Instructions Diligently

The foundation of a successful recovery starts with following your surgeon’s post-operative instructions to the letter. Every spine surgery is unique, and your surgeon will provide a tailored recovery plan based on the type of procedure, your overall health, and specific needs.

Why It Matters: Ignoring or modifying your surgeon’s advice can lead to complications such as infection, delayed healing, or even re-injury. For example, if you’re advised to avoid bending or lifting heavy objects, doing so prematurely can strain the surgical site and hinder recovery.

How to Do It:

  • Take prescribed medications as directed to manage pain and prevent infection.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.
  • Wear any recommended braces or supports to stabilize your spine.
  • Avoid activities that could jeopardize your recovery, such as driving or intense physical exertion, until cleared by your doctor.

By adhering to these guidelines, you’ll create an optimal environment for your body to heal. Always consult your surgeon if you’re unsure about any activity or experience unusual symptoms like increased pain or swelling.

2. Prioritize Gentle Movement and Physical Therapy

While rest is crucial after spine surgery, staying completely sedentary can slow your recovery. Gentle movement and physical therapy, as approved by your doctor, are key to improving circulation, reducing stiffness, and rebuilding strength.

Why It Matters: According to sources like Axes Physical Therapy, getting out of bed or up from a chair multiple times a day can improve circulation and joint mobility, which are essential for healing. Physical therapy also helps prevent scar tissue buildup and supports long-term spinal health.

How to Do It:

  • Start with short walks as soon as your doctor allows. Even a few steps around your home can make a difference.
  • Work with a physical therapist to develop a safe exercise plan tailored to your recovery stage.
  • Focus on low-impact activities like stretching or core-strengthening exercises to support your spine without overexerting it.
  • Avoid high-impact activities like running or jumping until your surgeon gives the green light.

Pro Tip: Consistency is key. Aim for gradual progress rather than pushing yourself too hard, which could lead to setbacks.

3. Optimize Your Nutrition for Healing

Your diet plays a significant role in how quickly you recover after spine surgery. A balanced, nutrient-rich diet provides your body with the building blocks it needs to repair tissues, reduce inflammation, and boost immunity.

Why It Matters: As highlighted by Sinicropi Spine, a diet full of vegetables, fruits, and healthy proteins can accelerate healing. Nutrients like protein, vitamin C, and zinc are particularly important for tissue repair and wound healing.

How to Do It:

  • Protein: Include lean meats, fish, eggs, or plant-based options like beans and lentils to support muscle repair.
  • Vitamins and Minerals: Eat citrus fruits, leafy greens, and nuts for vitamin C and zinc, which aid in collagen formation and immune function.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, as proper hydration supports overall recovery.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Foods: Incorporate foods like berries, fatty fish, and turmeric to reduce inflammation around the surgical site.

Pro Tip: Avoid processed foods, sugary snacks, and excessive alcohol, as they can increase inflammation and slow healing. If you have dietary restrictions, consult a nutritionist to ensure you’re meeting your body’s needs.

4. Manage Pain and Discomfort Naturally

Pain and discomfort are common after spine surgery, but managing them effectively can make a big difference in your recovery. While medications prescribed by your doctor are important, natural pain relief strategies can complement your treatment and promote faster healing.

Why It Matters: NJ Spine & Ortho and SpineDoctors.md recommend using heat and ice packs to ease pain without over-relying on medications, which can have side effects if used excessively. Proper pain management also helps you stay active and engaged in your recovery process.

How to Do It:

  • Heat and Ice Therapy: Alternate between heat and ice packs on your back (avoiding the surgical site if it’s still healing) to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Proper Sleep Position: Sleep in a position that doesn’t strain your back, such as on your side with a pillow between your knees or on your back with a pillow under your knees.
  • Relaxation Techniques: Practice deep breathing, meditation, or gentle stretching to reduce muscle tension and stress, which can exacerbate pain.
  • Ask for Help: If pain becomes severe, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor for guidance.

Pro Tip: Continuous, uninterrupted sleep is vital for healing, as noted by Atlantic Spine Center. Create a comfortable sleep environment to ensure you get enough rest.

5. Prepare Your Environment and Support System

Setting up your home and support system before surgery can significantly ease your recovery. A well-prepared environment reduces stress and helps you focus on healing rather than navigating unnecessary challenges.

Why It Matters: OrthoIndy emphasizes the importance of preparing your home and finding a caregiver to assist during recovery. Simple adjustments can prevent accidents and make daily tasks more manageable while you’re still regaining strength.

How to Do It:

  • Home Setup: Arrange your living space to minimize bending or reaching. Keep frequently used items at waist level, and set up a comfortable resting area with supportive pillows.
  • Caregiver Support: Enlist a family member or friend to help with tasks like cooking, cleaning, or driving during the early stages of recovery.
  • Safety Measures: Remove tripping hazards like loose rugs, and install grab bars in the bathroom if needed.
  • Mental Health: Stay connected with loved ones for emotional support, as recovery can sometimes feel isolating.

Pro Tip: Plan ahead by preparing meals or arranging for grocery delivery before your surgery. This ensures you have access to nutritious food without added stress.

Final Thoughts: Your Path to a Speedier Recovery

Recovering from spine surgery is a journey that requires patience, discipline, and the right strategies. By following these 5 essential tips for a faster recovery after spine surgery, you can minimize complications, reduce pain, and return to your normal activities sooner. Always prioritize your surgeon’s advice, listen to your body, and take recovery one step at a time.

If you’re preparing for spine surgery or are currently in the recovery phase, these tips can make a significant difference. Have additional questions about spine surgery recovery? Consult your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.

Understanding Epilepsy: Expert Insights from Dr. Rao’s Hospital

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder affecting millions worldwide, and finding expert care is crucial for managing it effectively. At Dr. Rao’s Hospital in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Mohana Rao Patibandla, a renowned neurosurgeon, leads a team dedicated to providing world-class epilepsy treatment. This blog answers common questions about epilepsy, including who it affects, its causes, driving regulations, symptoms that impair driving, risks of seizures while driving, safety tips, and liability in car accidents. Whether you’re seeking answers for yourself or a loved one, Dr. Rao’s Hospital is here to guide you toward a seizure-free life.

Who is Affected by Epilepsy?

Epilepsy can impact anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. It affects approximately 65 million people globally, with about 1.1% of U.S. adults living with the condition. At Dr. Rao’s Hospital, we see a diverse range of patients, from children to seniors, seeking advanced epilepsy care.

  • Children: Epilepsy is common in minors, with over 450,000 U.S. children diagnosed.

  • Seniors: Adults over 60 are at higher risk due to age-related brain changes or complications like stroke.

  • Family History: Those with a family history of epilepsy may have an increased risk.

  • Other Groups: Males and females of all races and ethnicities are equally susceptible.

Dr. Mohana Rao Patibandla, recognized as one of India’s top epilepsy specialists, emphasizes personalized care to help patients manage their condition effectively.

Causes of Epilepsy

Epilepsy results from abnormal brain activity, leading to seizures. While the exact cause varies, Dr. Rao’s team uses state-of-the-art diagnostics to identify triggers and tailor treatments. Common causes include:

  • Genetic Factors: Inherited conditions or gene mutations can predispose individuals to epilepsy.

  • Brain Injuries: Traumatic brain injuries, concussions, or head trauma may trigger seizures.

  • Infections: Conditions like meningitis or encephalitis can cause epilepsy.

  • Stroke or Tumors: Vascular issues or brain tumors can disrupt normal brain function.

  • Developmental Disorders: Autism or other neurodevelopmental conditions may increase epilepsy risk.

  • Unknown Causes: In many cases, no specific cause is identified, requiring specialized evaluation.

At Dr. Rao’s Hospital, our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) provides precise diagnostics to pinpoint causes, enabling targeted treatments like medication or minimally invasive surgery.

Laws and Regulations for Driving with Epilepsy

Driving with epilepsy involves strict regulations to ensure public safety, varying by region. In India, the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 currently prohibits individuals with epilepsy from obtaining a driver’s license, regardless of seizure frequency or control. In contrast, other countries have more flexible guidelines:

  • United States: Most states require a seizure-free period of 3–12 months, often with a doctor’s recommendation confirming seizure control. For example, Texas mandates a 3-month seizure-free period and a stable treatment plan.

  • Australia: A 6–12 month seizure-free period is typically required.

  • Exceptions: Some regions allow driving for those with nocturnal seizures, prolonged auras, or focal aware seizures that don’t impair consciousness, subject to medical evaluation.

Dr. Rao advises patients to consult local driving authorities and their neurologist to understand specific regulations. Noncompliance can lead to legal consequences, including license suspension.

Symptoms of Epilepsy That Can Impair Driving Abilities

Certain epilepsy symptoms can significantly affect driving safety. Dr. Mohana Rao Patibandla highlights the following symptoms that may impair driving:

  • Loss of Consciousness: Common in generalized seizures, this can cause a complete inability to control a vehicle.

  • Muscle Spasms or Jerking: Uncontrollable movements in arms or legs during seizures can hinder steering or braking.

  • Focal Impaired Awareness Seizures: These cause confusion, disorientation, or memory lapses, making it unsafe to respond to road conditions.

  • Auras: Sensory disturbances like tingling or hallucinations may signal an impending seizure, requiring drivers to pull over immediately.

  • Post-Seizure Effects: Fatigue, headaches, or nausea after a seizure can reduce alertness and reaction times.

At Dr. Rao’s Hospital, our team uses advanced testing, such as video-EEG monitoring, to assess how seizures affect patients, helping them make informed decisions about driving.

What Happens if a Seizure Occurs While Driving?

A seizure while driving can have severe consequences, posing risks to the driver, passengers, and others on the road. Potential outcomes include:

  • Loss of Vehicle Control: A seizure can lead to crashes with fixed objects, other vehicles, or pedestrians, causing property damage, injuries, or fatalities. Studies show 52% of epilepsy-related crashes involve single vehicles, often hitting fixed objects.

  • Legal Repercussions: Driving against medical advice or without reporting seizures to the DMV can result in fines, license suspension, or criminal charges if injuries occur.

  • Injury or Death: Seizure-related accidents can lead to life-altering injuries or, in rare cases, death for those involved.

If a seizure occurs while driving, Dr. Rao recommends:

  1. Pull Over Safely: If an aura is felt, stop the vehicle in a safe location immediately.

  2. Contact Emergency Services: Ensure safety and seek medical attention.

  3. Consult Your Doctor: Schedule a follow-up to reassess treatment and driving eligibility.

Safety Tips for Driving with Epilepsy

For individuals with epilepsy whose seizures are well-controlled, driving may be possible with precautions. Dr. Mohana Rao Patibandla and the team at Dr. Rao’s Hospital offer these safety tips:

  • Adhere to Medication: Take anti-seizure drugs as prescribed to maintain control. Noncompliance increases seizure risk.

  • Track Seizure Triggers: Keep a seizure diary to identify and avoid triggers like stress, sleep deprivation, or alcohol.

  • Regular Medical Checkups: Visit your neurologist to monitor seizure control and adjust treatment as needed.

  • Avoid Driving if Symptomatic: Refrain from driving if you experience auras, fatigue, or recent seizures.

  • Know Your Limits: Avoid driving during high-risk situations, such as after medication changes or during periods of stress.

  • Create a Seizure Action Plan: Share a plan with family or coworkers to manage seizures safely.

Dr. Rao’s Hospital provides comprehensive support, including counseling and minimally invasive epilepsy surgery, to help patients achieve seizure control and safely regain independence.

Liability in Car Accidents Involving Epilepsy

Liability in epilepsy-related car accidents depends on local laws and the driver’s compliance with regulations. Key considerations include:

  • Failure to Report: Not informing the DMV or driving against medical advice can lead to civil or criminal liability, especially if injuries occur.

  • Insurance Issues: Insurance companies may deny coverage for accidents during a seizure if the driver concealed their condition or was noncompliant with treatment.

  • Negligence: Drivers who knowingly drive with uncontrolled seizures may face lawsuits for negligence, particularly if they cause harm.

Dr. Rao advises patients to be transparent with their doctor and DMV to minimize legal risks. Proper documentation of seizure-free periods and medical clearance can protect against liability.
